Olive paced through the house as Peter examined Ziva. She’d determined by Zac’s contorted expression that he was worried about his partner. She had stood at the entrance as he’d asked the vet questions, including his suspicions on Ziva being the intended target of tonight’s attack.

Could that be true? If so, why try to smother her? Perhaps they had both been the targets. Either way, Olive clenched her fists as her bulldog temperament bubbled to the surface. Sure, she had a fear of dogs, but Ziva was quickly becoming a friend, and Olive Wells protected her friends.

With her entire being.

Brett and Lesley had taken samples of their blood to be tested. The chief had told Zac he’d request they be expedited. It was vital to their investigation.

She paced the cabin, her best thinking activity. She wanted to figure out how the assailant had found them and drugged them under their noses. Right now, Zac was preoccupied and she totally understood. Ziva needed him. Grace had stirred again and Olive had given her water. She was back in bed, but awake and reading. Olive would not send her to school today. Plus, they had to move since the suspect had somehow found their cabin.

Chief Bennett had brought in extra security until they determined where to hide out. Was this all the Jingle Bell Bomber’s doing? It was the only answer. She prayed the team could stay off JB’s radar for a few days. They required rest and recuperation from the past twenty-four hours. If they didn’t, they’d be in no shape to fight him off. She scoffed at the idea that JB would stop targeting victims while they rested.

She looked at the table. The forensics team had taken the pizza box, partially drunk pop bottles, and dirty plates to test. They’d also made footprint impressions and examined Olive’s room where the suspect had attacked her earlier.

Lauren shuffled into the living room, nursing a cup of coffee. She plunked herself in the rocker by the fireplace. “Are we safe here, Olive? I don’t want to die. Shouldn’t we be leaving?”

The tremor in Lauren’s voice confirmed the woman’s angst. Not that Olive blamed her. Their safety—especially Grace’s—concerned her, but it wasn’t easy to find a place to accommodate them all in this smaller town.

“Chief Bennett has more officers keeping close watch of the perimeter. No one will get by them.” Well, at least she prayed that to be the case. Somehow, JB had infiltrated the premises with no one’s knowledge.

“I still can’t believe Fraser is gone.” Tears tumbled down the analyst’s cheeks.

Olive walked over to her coworker. It was true she and Lauren rarely got along, but Fraser’s loss had hit Lauren hard. She required compassion. Olive squatted beside her and squeezed her hand. “I know. Were you and Fraser close?”

“I think he had a secret crush on me, but he wasn’t my type.” She bit her lip. “I want to go home.”

Me too. “Lauren, we’re safer together. Plus, I need your help with JB’s ever-changing profile.
